Illusions - Part 13
She stared at the doctor with desperation for him to spill the truth out. The truth that was hidden to her for five years by her husband. The doctor was finding right words to begin the story. He was aware that how sensitive people become when they listen to stories of their closed one’s betrayal. “Well, the doctor who impersonated me isn’t really a doctor. He was my former housekeeper staff. Kabir is his nephew and assistant in all his crime.”, he finally spoke.
Her eyes grew wide. She couldn’t believe that her husband could ever do anything wrong. She wondered what more was going to come up now. “This uncle - nephew duo would con my patient in my name and prescribe wrong medicines in my absence . Sometimes they would charge them exorbitant fees or turn as robbers and loot them at their homes . One fine day, my close friend barged into my home with the police to arrest me . I was taken aback.”, he continued but stopped when he remembered the time he was wrongly accused by his friend.
She was feeling tinge of pain grow inside her. It was getting unbearable with every truth being displayed in front of her. Tears welled up in her eyes, she controlled her emotions that were urging to come out. “What happened next, Doctor?”, she asked. “ My friend narrated me everything. He told me how I had manipulated his niece in to believing she was suffering from incurable illness and prescribed wrong medicine . I was shaken by his allegations. I knew it wasn’t me. I tried to convince my friend . But he didn’t believe . I somehow convinced him to give me few days to bring the truth in front of him.”, he said.
“With a help of detective, I found the whole truth in a weeks time. I called the police and my friend and got the real culprit caught. They were imprisoned for eight years. At the time your husband was minor , so he got lesser sentence. He was sent to remand home for four years.”, he continued. “Then he found me at the cafe and introduced himself as young scientist. I like a fool befriended him without realising the selfish motive. For four years he played with my heart.” , she spoke immediately recalling all the events. “I m sure he must have wounded Joseph.”, she wondered as she rose up quickly to leave.
While leaving , she turned back and said, “Thank you, doctor . Now I need to get back home and clean the mess I bought five years ago into my life.” “Sure. But be careful. They are dangerous. If you need my help, do let me know.”, he said . She headed towards the hospital to check on Joseph. When she reached hospital, she found out that he was in ICU through receptionist. She checked ICU before visiting the doctor in charge of Joseph. Joseph’s face looked swollen . He was breathing through ventilator. He was still unconscious.
After the visit from the doctor, she got to know that Joseph needed one more week to recover and come back to conscious. She spoke to the doctor about taking charge of all fees related to treatment. She wanted him to be fine as he was important witness to the heinous crime committed by the uncle-nephew duo. During this week, she wanted to collect all the evidence against them to put them behind bars.
