Illusions- Part 11
Shaina’s mind was fixed on to the news. The newsreader spoke with the poker face. She mentioned the state of Joseph when he was bought to hospital and the number of times he was stabbed. She also mentioned that police was on lookout for the killer. Shaina switched off the TV irritatedly.
She wondered whether her husband was the killer. Immediately she changed her mind thinking it couldn’t be him as he was too gentle to kill anyone. Last month’s fiasco with Joseph reminded her how coldly he had dismissed him and said how much she mattered to him . The question again began to torment her - Did he kill him to avenge the trauma she been through.
She was engrossed in her thoughts that she didn’t notice Kabir entering the room. She only realised his presence when he sat next to her. He noticed her confused expression and spoke, “What’s the matter?” “ Where were you the whole night ?”, she asked. He became nervous. “Why do you ask ?”, he quipped. She was astonished by his cold behaviour. “ What’s wrong with you? You are acting strangely after Joseph was fired. I know this has impacted you badly but I have moved on and you need to do the same .” , she said irritatedly.
“And yesterday night , you were missing. Your phone was switched off. I was scared something bad might have happened to you. When you arrived in the morning, I was relieved for few minutes but taken aback when I saw blood on you. I was worried. You didn’t say anything . Next I saw the news that Joseph was stabbed and killer hasn’t been found . I am scared.” , she ranted out her frustration.
He put his head on her lap. “ I am sorry if you think I acted strangely. I didn’t want to scare you so I hid the fact that someone has been blackmailing me. Yesterday when I was returning back home , a vehicle came and dashed me from the other side. I hit my head on the steering wheel.”, he said softly. She brushed on the small cut on his forehead.
“A man came out of the vehicle. Before I could understand what was happening, he dragged me out and pushed me down. He took out a knife and stabbed me. Before he could stab me again, Dr Prabhakar , your psychiatrist arrived. The man ran away. The doctor took me to his place and nursed me back to health.”, he continued. A pinch of guilt engulfed her. “ I am sorry for mistaking you for the killer. I am really sorry.”, she sobbed while scolding herself for thinking like that.
